Any way to alter an imported 2.5-D file in Easel?

Hello all,

Wondering if any of you have a solution to my problem. I purchased a 2.5-D carving of a skull that I need to put onto a project. Unfortunately as it is, it will not work for me because the designer created a tool-path that cuts it out, rather than simply carving it into a surface.
Is there a way for me to remove the ‘cut-out’ portion of the carve, and keep everything else?

again for clarity, I wish to carve the skull into a workpiece. I DO NOT want that to then cut the skull out of the workpiece, and so want to remove the n"cut-out" portion of the carve, but leave everything else. Is there a way to accomplish this in Easel?

I reached out to the designer of the file to see if he has, or could create the same project without the ‘cut-out’, but figured that I’d ask you guys in the hopes that I can save a lot of down-time.

here is the project:

It sounds like you want a 3d skull cut out of the wood or you want a skull routed into the wood the same depth all around. I don’t have pro Easel so I can’t play with it in Rhino.

Hi Marin,

I want the skull routed into the wood, but DO NOT want it cut out. As 2.5D cannot be created in Easel, it has to be imported. I bought the file on Etsy and imported it. The file ‘appeared’ to be what I wanted, but once imported it became obvious that the file is set to cut out a square around the skull. I do not want that cut out, I only it routed into the wood. Wondering if there is a way to edit the tool-path now that it is in Easel to allow for the carve without cutting it free from the finished piece.

Random thoughts… can the stl be exploded and then you can delete what you don’t want? Gcode can be edited in a word processor. In Mach 3 you can watch the lines of code as it progresses and see where it is on the screen. I don’t have Easel pro, so I don’t know what it can and can’t do.

Interesting thought. I don’t know. I’ll play around (I don’t know if Easel allows editing of individual tool paths, but one way to find out…)

Thanks Martin

Okay, for anyone who happens onto this post, I figured out the solution (!!)

In Easel Pro, when you import a 2.5D file, there are additional menu buttons which do not exist normally in Easel. One of these buttons is called “Cut Style”. Again, I have been unable to find this button in any of my other carves, and in fact, I need to combine a 2.5D carve along with some inlay, and so have it set up as two different work-pieces (because as we all know, Easel has the limitation of only allowing two bit carves, AND does not allow for the user to dictate which parts of the carve use which bits, but I digress…).

On the work-piece with the 2.5D carve, this button (as well as others) appears, but on the second work-piece - which is the exact same project - for the inlay, the button DOES NOT appear.

Anyway…

the button labels “Cut Style” offers three choices: Full Depth, Rectangle Relief, and Model Boundary Relief.
The button defaults to “Full Depth” and when carving in this mode, it cuts out the project (aka, cute the project out of the work-piece.
The second option is 'Rectangle Relief" which will carve a rectangle around the model. The user can determine the size and depth of the rectangle.
The last option is “Model Boundary Relief”

In my case I am carving a human skull into a guitar neck. I obviously do not want the model completely cut out. Additionally, the file that I bought already has a rectangle relief around the skull, so I do not need to use the rectangle relief option. So I changed the setting from the default to “Model boundary relief”, and this solved my issue - yea!!!

An Inventables YouTube video that was very helpful in ‘getting me there’ was this one:
