Z setting off table

Use a z probe and put it on the table. You could also lower the z until it hits a piece of paper and reset your Z to that position. That is the way I do it using the Universal Gcode sender. I don’t use Easel for control as I don’t have internet where I work and I just got used to UGS.

AI Overview

To set the Z-axis zero position in Easel without a probe, you’ll need to manually lower the router bit to the desired Z-zero position on your material and then use Easel’s “Set Work Zero” feature. This involves carefully positioning the bit and using the jogging controls to get the correct Z-axis height before setting the zero point.

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. 1. Prepare your material:

Place your material on the CNC machine’s bed and ensure it’s securely clamped.

  1. 2. Position the bit:

Manually move the router bit to a position that is approximately the desired Z-zero height above the material. You can use the jogging controls to move the bit up and down.

  1. 3. Fine-tune the Z-axis:

Use the jogging controls to carefully lower the bit until it just touches the surface of your material. You can use a piece of paper as a gauge; when the paper can barely be pulled out from under the bit, you’re close.

  1. 4. Set the zero point:

In Easel, navigate to the “Carve” menu. Easel will guide you through setting the work zero. Choose the “Set Work Zero” option and select the “Set X, Y, and Z Work Zero” option. Easel will now register the current position of the bit as the zero point for the Z-axis.

Important Considerations:

  • Safety:

Always be cautious when working with the router bit and ensure the machine is powered off when making manual adjustments.

  • Accuracy:

For more precise Z-zero setting, you can use a thin piece of material (like paper) as a feeler gauge to ensure the bit is at the correct height.

If you have homing enabled, the machine will first return to its home position before setting the work zero, ensuring accurate positioning.

  • Bit Changes:

If you change the router bit during a project, you’ll need to repeat the Z-zeroing process for the new bit.
