Been using Easel Pro for quite some time. Today while I was carving a Christmas present the cut went a bit wonkers and I had to shut it down. I’ve cut this design out many times but this time there were no tabs being left in the cut so a loose piece shifted and the bit deflected and I lost an expensive piece of Rosewood. Tabs are in my design but for some reason, the carve didn’t leave them on the last couple of passes. Any suggestions?
Curious. How did you zero the z axis.
Manually. I don’t like the Z probe.
Hope that you do mind me asking basic questions but what was your stock set to and what did it measure with calipers. Did you home the machine in all 3 axis? What machine do you have? In the shape tab, What are your readings in Easel. Have you check the accuracy of the step per millimeter? Have a look at what thw keyboard controls are showing for X y and Z position.
Well, I have the X-Carve about 5 years old with the upgrade kit. I don’t home the machine, never had any issues in the past. The material measured at .75 exactly, I mill my material, and the thickness setting on the design at .77 for a bit of over cut. the height of the tabs are set to .08 so that’s a non-issue. Used a 1/8” double fluted straight bit for the cut. I have made many of these in the past and no problems. The project was coming perfect if it hadn’t been for the tabs not left in so the wood wouldn’t shift.
Press ctrl+shi +d to open this page then under the “Console” header type the position that if you want to see the control settings.
I have no idea what I would be looking at. Everything was working fine till now. I’ll try when I’m in my shop.
Look at the greyed out numbers. This example is from a homed spindle so everything is shown as zero position for XYZ’s. If you move the spindle with the buttons then these numbers will change to reflect the new work position. (where the cutting will begin) So what you should see when you home the machine, these numbers should all be showing zero. If you move the spindle to anywhere else, the controller will assign this position as the work position to start the machining operation. Click on the green arrow to move the spindle in that direction. Currently set to move 0.1” for each push of the button. The spindle will move that interval dimension in the direction that you choose.
If you do not home the machine then you’re guessing and gambling that this dumb machine that pretends to be smarter than you and should instinctively know what you are trying to do.
(not very likely) But :’m hoping!
Quick update. My missing tabs was operator error. I’ve carved this project many times, just change names for a new one. My last time was a thicker wood, .83 this time was .75, I changed the thickness on the lettering carve but forgot when it was time to cut out the piece. Ruined an expensive wood blank but learned to slow my roll. Thanks for the help.
