That looks to be 1/4" depth. How long did that take to burn?
Awesome job.
wow! thats killer!
Your x-carve is going to get very jealous soon!
How much of the Eagle Scout award is laser and how much CNC?
Thanks, I did not know the Glowforge could engrave brass.
Do the blanks come ready for the laser, or do you need to coat them?
Youre killing it! Also Im so tempted to buy C02 now.
Phil, that is beautiful work, and I do not want to nit pick it, but… the name sign really seems out of place. Could you mount the entire piece to a backer board and have the name attached under the fleur de lis?
I saw the Glowforge when they first came out on Kickstarter. So hard not to buy one, just couldn’t justify the price tag. Got an X-Carve instead
At least the glowforge delivery time is fast, I ordered a boss laser about the same time Phil announced his, my lead time is 5-7 weeks… Phil will have a warehouse full of material by the time mine shows up
seems like an after thought.
I agree, I like the placement. What is bothering me, is that the edge of the shield piece is showing beyond the edges of the plate; I think they should be sized the same so that there is no border around the plate…maybe easier said than done?
It’s all about the artist’s artistic liberty. When you design pieces as classy and well done as Phil and show them on the forums then you can discuss your artistic liberty. Until then be amazed at the work Phil does and how much he gives back to the forum. I bet if you asked him for help designing something like he has created here, he would bend over backwards to help you learn how. And who is to say that any design isn’t the specific way his customer wanted it. Just because we don’t prefer something doesn’t mean that isn’t the best or only way the the user designed or demanded the product being done. Design is personal, criticism can become personal when you don’t know the personal reason for the design.
I personally think it looks awesome. Would I change some minor things if I designed it, maybe. But I am 100% sure that the individual that receives this will love it for the rest of their life.
Its funny… I don’t seem to recall @PhilJohnson asking for opinions nor constructive criticism. He posted something because he wanted to share. He posted it to perhaps inspire the next person. He posted because he was proud. There is nothing here that required you to comment.
You must be sooooooo much fun to work with…
Good luck with your projects.
…and where exactly was @AllenMassey 's original comment impolite?
I had very similar feelings to others in this thread about that particular issue, it’s been voiced three times so far. My initial post was a 100% genuine observation with no malintent. Attacking someone for an observation is juvenile, and jumping in to reinforce that behavior is as well. Everyone uses the board for different purposes. If you run across my posts, I will more than welcome any feedback. Especially, and most importantly, criticism. When I post something online, that is part of sharing. I do not feel like I’m entitled to be absolved of criticism and/or negative feedback.
I did not mean to start any trouble, as Angus said I made a comment about the design, Phil replied he liked it the way he did it. So that really should have been the end of it.
But I do think there is a bigger issue. In my opinion constructive criticism is perfectly ok to give. One of the things I like most about this forum is that it is a place where people post their work. I post some of my work here also. Getting criticism is part of the deal for posting work. Personally I like the feedback, that does not mean I will make a change to what I did, I might even think the comment is a stupid idea. But all the comments always make me think about why I made the decisions I did. And sometimes I get a comment that is really a better idea and I kick myself for not seeing the better way of doing something.
Awesome work @PhilJohnson! Keep em comin’.
I must be missing something. I didn’t say anything about Alan Massey or his politeness or impoliteness
sorry I just hit reply and it seems it was to your post. my bad
