Having been a user of both the X-Carve and Easel software, I have been very super happy with how easy it was to both design and operate the machine. I moved on in life and became an instructor. Over the years have had hundreds of students introduced to the world of CNC and I know several have purchased your equipment.
The ease and simplicity of Easel software has made this adventure a great success. Recent so called “upgrades” in the software has made operations difficult and sometimes impossible. An example is the change in choosing bits. Clicking on the Bit button, one sees a listing of manufacturers bits only. There seems to be NO place to choose bits from the previous list. I could not find a simple 90 degree bit anywhere. This added complexity appeared during a class and even with students with much higher levels of computer expertise, we could not move forward on design and had to cancel the class. I came back later to explore the software and found my attempts to use a v-bit added a 1/8" straight bit for a first run requiring changing over to a v-bit for a second pass even though all design parts were only using a v-bit. Is this totally crazy?
I am also seeing a few other new software features which are downgrading the ability to simply move forward on design work. WHY? Why are software developers making everything more complicated when the software has been working perfectly for so many years? Please return to the original design software so we can all have fun in life!!!
Thanks for being a longtime Easel user! I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble – and to hear that it has impacted your classes.
Would it be possible for you to take a picture or a screenshot of what you’re seeing when trying to choose a new bit?
I want to make sure I understand what’s going on in order to point you in the right direction or to identify if anything needs fixing on our end. Feel free to reply back with a photo or screenshot and we’ll take a look.

Thank you for your reply. Not sure hw to do screen shots. I designed up a new project and again tried to Choose a v-bit. There are 2 buttons on the menu to choose bits now, the first one has only manufacturers bits and below it are other bits which can not be chosen. The second button has a choice of bits but only combines it with rough cut and detailed bits. I try to choose a v-bit and when I start the check-off process just before carving it shows a 1/8" bit for rough carving and a v-bit for detailed carving. Why??? I only want to carve with a v-bit. Why so complicated? What happened to simple and easy and efficient?
To do screen shots and you are on a PC…You can hold down the shift and prtSc keys. Paste it into paint. Crop it or do any editing and save it with a file name. The above is an example of that.
