STL imports with incorrect scale -- still an issue

When I import an STL, it comes in too large. I see others have had this issue and those threads are now closed with no obvious resolution. I create my STL files using Rhino. I do this for 3d printing all of the time and experience no scaling issues there, so the problem is isolated to Easel.

This file should be 5mm tall in z. It imports as 8.3 mm.
round_beads_1.stl (6.8 MB)

I use Rhino as well and it did the same thing to me. I even put a bounding box around them and lowered them to the Z 0 plane. It did the same thing.

Hi. Easel will scale to fit the material that you have setup in the project when you import a STL. The file is still aspect correct, so you can lock the dimensions and set the Z height to 5 mm and that will size it correctly.

We originally did this for users who were buying STL files from various sources that would come into Easel at extreme sizes and provide for a poor experience. If you are importing a model you made - it makes sense to have an option to import as-is, or fit to material when importing.

We will take this into consideration and should provide an option to import true-to-scale soon. Thanks,

Ben

We’ve update the STL import dialog so that you can opt-out of the automatic scaling. It’s enabled by default, but you can uncheck “Scale model to fit material” and it will import at dimensions in the file. It assumes the unit preference of the current workpiece since coordinates in an STL file are otherwise unit-less.
