Trouble with depth of cut

When i start the cut, the machine cuts at the overall depth which is 1/8 .12692 and the depth per pass is .028. everytime no matter what i set the depth for

Are you using the top of the material as Z zero or the bottom? If you don’t have Z probe, a piece of thin paper works well as a feeler guage.

I use my old feeler gauges as they go down to 0.001” and increase by 0.001. Well worth the $10 bucks at KMS when not on sale. The concern this they are harder than paper so some care must be used to protect the surfaces.

I touch the left front corner, and I use a sheet of paper and just touch enough so the paper has a little resistance. I’m wondering if it’s the picture I uploaded and cleaned up.

I have a zeroing touch plate from millright but I don’t use it. Haven’t learned how to use it. I’m not computer literate and have trouble with computers. I’m still learning this craft of cnc, but brain damage from football and the military makes it hard to keep things in the memory. But im trying and yes i do write stuff down if i remember

You might have to check your Grbl settings for the Z axis to make sure that what you ask it to move is what it really moves. Perhaps your Z axis is moving more steps per mm than it is supposed to. If you can provide a portion of the beginning gcode, we could see more clearly what it is supposed to do. Gcode is text that is within the Grbl program that controls the router. In Easel you can download it into a text file that will open in a word processor like notepad, wordpad, or Word. You could even do a screen shot of the gcode within Easel and post that like a picture.

I like you, had to learn this stuff myself, but once you can do it, it becomes fairly routine.

Heres what i dont understand, changed from 60 degree bit to a 90 degree bit, with out changing any settings and its working like it supposed to.

Just changed back to a 60 degree bit and it works fine. One day Ill get this down right. Thanks for the responses and help.

DOP is a pro option?

Was just checking somewhere else and saw that if you don’t have the Pro version then Depth Of Pass(DOP) is not adjustable. It’s suppose to cut at full depth. If you wanted a 0.050 deep cut for a job with a total depth 0.150, you would have to change the cut depth to 0.050 and then change it to 0.100 and repeat the carve and then change the total depth to 0.150 for your final pass. I am not %100 sure as a hundred thou. is a quite big cut for me but that is what easel indicates on their web pages.

I understand that peck drilling can be used on the free versions of Easel. Keep Trying stuff and it we become second nature.

For the OP…One can still set the depth of the part in the Cut window with the slider and make the depth per pass what ever you want in the manual mode. I don’t have pro and I decide how deep I want the part to be cut and then make a choice on depth per cut to avoid hogging out too much.

Good thing there are smarter people on this forum.

Have you seen issues just recently? And did you do the driver update? I have barely had any problems with the machine in the past year other than a couple things caused by user error….and now the depth of cut is off big time, not to mention im carving drawer handles out of hard maple. But i wasn’t having issues until i did the driver update. —which would be my bet on why. Not sure if this is related, just curious.
