Use last z height for same tool

I carve with the same tool without removing it and would like to be able to not only use last day but also last z height for my next carve.

I have situations in some carves where I get rid of the area I probed and can’t re probe to the exact height

Agreed, this would also help speed up batch carves, so you could reuse both XY & Z if you don’t need sub-mm accuracy (i.e., you are cutting all the way through to the spoilboard anyway).

I can’t trust my Z axis at all. It gets near the end of a run and goes stupid. It doesn’t matter if it’s a long project or a short one. Now I’m using UGS to do the machine work. It’s a pain in the butt losing the on-the-fly speed and rate changes. It’s better than losing a customer because I can’t get a project done.
As for bit changes, I use brass machinist setup bars. My height above the material for start/finish is 1/4". It works perfect. My bar is usually large enough to span cutout areas. I try to use cut depths that are multiples 1/16". Knowing my cut depth in pockets, I can stack the bars if I need to for reaching my height above the material surface. I hope that helps. (I use setup bars a lot. They’re huge time savers.)

So, I don’t know when it happened, but they now have a Repeat Carve feature. It might need to be enabled, but if it is and you click CARVE without switching workpieces or changing the design at all, it lets you repeat the carve with no changes.

Since you don’t have to remove the dust boot, either, it really speeds up batch processing. I just move the toolhead back enough to replace the piece I’m working on, swap blanks, and move it back, exit the window and click carve again.

It’s drastically sped up my ability to produce multiples of a design, especially since I usually mill my own wood at the same time, so the thickness is pretty precise.

You can use the previous X/Y/Z zero position by selecting “Manual” on this screen:

After selecting “Manual,” select “Use last position” from this screen:

Oof, that’s not very intuitive. You guys should move the “Use last position” option to the Probe or Manual screen, because I’ve never clicked Manual and didn’t even know this was an option. Would have saved me a lot of time in the past.

I agree. It is not obvious and could be better placed.

I know that everyone has their set of their own “needed” drawing aids and buttons but I would rather have to remember that there is the ability the option to use “last position” which includes the “Z” position and have snaps and their types available or some other nice feature. Maybe an increased zoom in range in the edit points screen. Most of the things that I draw are less that 20 mm.

When I draw things, I always have one main driving dimension for an assembly or part and I don’t want that dimension to ever change but I want that part to be able to be moved either by nudging it over or moving it with the cursor.

Much as I enjoy parametric modeling, I do not want that feature on Easel. Easel does have some short comings but I don’t want to donate a couple of hours in Fusion when I could wisely use a couple of minutes in Easel for the same completed part or assembly.

Remember the days of CNTRL “A”, CNTRL “B” and the other HOT keys on a little cheat sheet beside your monitor? Easel and GRBL will remember the last used start position if you just press the carve as it remembers work position with out doing anything.

Keeps up the really nice work!

It remembers X, Y, and Z positions that you originally set that the carve used to start the carve
